Xiaomi has recently launched the successor to their entry level smartphone. The Redmi 2S succeeds the Redmi 1S which was launched last year. The phone has got hardware upgrades and minor cosmetic changes when compared to its predecessor but nothing very significant. It is exclusively available on Flipkart and is being sold through Flash sale. Like most of the other Xiaomi devices this device too has been priced very competitively and is available for just Rs 6,999/- ($115 approx).

Xiaomi Redmi 3S/Prime: Budget Smartphone

It has 4G LTE support enabled and both the SIM slots are 4G enabled.

Let’s look at the reasons to buy this phone:-

Affordable Price: The phone is priced at just Rs 6,999/- which is quite impressive for a phone with such decent specifications. It has got most of the features found on a mid range devices and also supports 4G LTE.

Decent Hardware Configuration: Redmi 2S sports a faster processor (A53) and a new 64 bit chipset (Snapdragon 410) which is pretty snappy and tends to heat much less than its predecessor. The GPU used is Adreno 306 which again will be able to handle most of the games. It has a decent camera and build quality is also quite good as compared to other budget end devices in the market. The phone is very light and sleek which makes single hand operation possible for most of the users. Snapdragon 410 chipset has also minimized heating issues to a great extent.

Good Overall Performance: The phone is able to perform most of the functions which you expect from a mid range phone. Hence in terms of price to performance ratio it is completely value for money device. The call quality has also been improved with this device and moderate users will be more than happy with the performance of this device. The MiUi 6 interface does provide a lot of functions too.

Reasons to avoid this phone:-

Ram Management, Battery Life & Storage: The phone is not recommended for heavy users as it has got just 1 Gb of Ram and you will find it lagging while multitasking. The phone does have better Ram management capability than its predecessor but still it will struggle under heavy use. The battery has also been beefed up to 2200 mah which does improve the battery life to a certain extent but not drastically. Moderate users will be able to survive a full working day on a single charge but heavy users with 4G connection may have to charge it twice. The fact that it has got just 8gb internal storage out of which around approximately 5.6 gb is for the end users may turn away gamers.

Xiaomi slow with Updates: I have observed Xiaomi is pretty slow in rolling out updates for their device so it remains to be seen whether this device gets or when it gets the Android Lollipop update. The Xiaomi MiUi 6 interface is quite good and offers a lot of features but still in my opinion it needs a bit more optimization to enhance the user experience.

Overall Impression

In my opinion it is a very good Budget 4G Smartphone and does offer value for money. It is very difficult to have all the features at this price point so users will have to decide on the device according to their priority. This phone will compete with the Moto E2 and Lenovo A6000 and users will have to decide on which one they prefer.

But Redmi 2S has an upgraded version too which has got 16 Gb storage and 2 Gb Ram. So I feel it will offer greater value for money and will deliver slightly improved performance as compared to the present version of Redmi 2S. Hence if buyers can wait then they should go for upgraded Redmi 2S. I feel it will be launched pretty soon.
