Moto X 2nd Generation is the Flagship device of Motorola for the year 2014. The device packs some incredible specifications and is priced competitively as compared to rival brands. The phone is an overall upgrade from the Moto X 2013 version along with some improvements. Let’s take a close look at the device:-

Build

Motorola has once again come up with excellent build quality on this handset. Phone sports a quality plastic back which is sturdy but has a rubberish feel to it and is very comfortable to hold. On the chassis you have aluminium finish which holds the phone together and gives it a premium finish. The dramatic feature of the design is that despite being a 5.2 inch device it is actually more compact than some of the 5 inch devices. So if you have larger palms you may well be able to handle the device single handedly. Since most of the 5 inch device are 144 mm long and about 74 mm wide while Moto X 2014 is just 140.8 mm long and 72.4 mm wide. The curved back also helps to give a better grip to the users.

Display

Moto X 2014 comes with a full HD Amoled display and gives an impressive pixel density of 424 ppi. Here again the Motorola team has done a great job and you will love the display quality and color reproduction on screen. But as the case with the Amoled screen at times you might feel the display is oversaturated. The device comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 cover on top and viewing angles on this phone is also excellent. The Auto Brightness sensor also works pretty well on the handset. Overall the display seems to be vibrant and crisp.

Hardware

The phone does not come with anything spectacular on this front and packs the standard Qualcomm Snapdragon 801chipset with Quad Core Krait 400 processor clocked at 2.5 ghz. The device is backed by 2gb Ram and GPU used is Adreno 330 clocked at 578 mhz. It is available in two variant of 16gb and 32 gb respectively. However no SD card expansion is available on the handset. In India only 16 gb variant is available at the moment. Lack of SD card support on the device could be a limiting factor for this device. Apart from that the device is pretty much comparable to the other flagship devices in terms of specifications. Gaming is pretty pleasant with a tad larger screen and compact design.

Software

Moto X2 runs on the latest Android Kitkat 4.4.4 and upgrade to Android L is also assured. Out of the box you can enjoy the stock android experience barring few applications from Motorola. The OS runs very smooth on the device and is completely lagfree.
The best part about the phone is Voice Control feature which can be customized by the user as well. The feature works very well and voice response is fabulous. The device manages to perform a lot of tasks thrown at it through voice commands and is able to perform them efficiently. Active Notification features have also been improved compared to the previous Moto X 2013 version.

Battery Life

Here Motorola could have done better and there is scope for improvement in the future. The battery will just be able to last you through the day with moderate to slightly heavy use. It sports a 2300 mah battery which is slightly low for an 5.2 inch device along with it the Active Notification and Voice Control feature also use up quite a bit of the battery.
So for very heavy users I would suggest you to carry a powerbank while travelling. As compared to other flagships they do sport slightly more powerful battery.

Camera

The rear camera is a 13 megapixel shooter backed by dual LED flash while the Front camera is a 2 megapixel shooter. The rear camera is also capable of recording 4K videos while front can shoot videos upto 1080p. The rear camera is capable of taking decent pictures but sometimes you will find that the images are oversaturated. The images come out to be a bit dull in low lights but still I feel the camera performance is satisfactory.
The video recording capability on the device is also decent.

Overall Impression

The phone does possess some incredible features like the active notifications and voice controls which makes it an attractive buy. Further the build and design is something which is simple yet elegant and makes it more user friendly. Although the camera, battery life is average and non expandable storage is bit of a letdown. But overall the phone is incredible considering the Stock android experience along with assured updates and smooth performance. The call quality and reception is decent. Furthermore the price at which it comes is also pretty attractive.
