Moto G5 Plus: All You Need To Know

Lenovo owned Motorola recently launched the successor to their G Series smartphones, the Moto G5 Plus. The phone is exclusively available on Flipkart and has been priced very competitively at Rs 14,999/- for the base variant and Rs 16,999/- for the premium variant.  Motorola did not do quite well with their Moto M launched few months back but with Moto G5 Plus they are aiming to capture the midrange segment. Within few days of its launch Moto G5 Plus has grabbed a lot of attention and market share as well.

Like its predecessor the Moto G5 Plus is also being hyped for having the best rear camera in the midrange segment. However, it is not only the Camera which is good on this device, the Hardware specs provided is also quite impressive.

Build and Display: Moto G5 Plus comes with the metal unibody design which looks decent, however, the plastic rims do takeaway some shine off the device. G5 Plus has also lost the Moto dimple found at the back which provided ideal space for the index finger to rest, I would have preferred the finger print scanner at the same spot. The phone sports the finger print scanner below the display which is acceptable given the larger lower end bezels. Although the phone has just 5.2 inch display, single hand use on this phone may not be possible as they phone is relatively larger due to extended top and lower end bezels.

The Moto G5 Plus has 5.2 inch Full HD display with Corning Gorilla glass protection. The IPS LCD screen is decent and images appear crisp while viewing angles is decent.

Battery Life: The phone comes with modest 3,000 mah battery but it does support turbo charging (fast charging) which means it will require much less time to charge. In fact the device uses the Snapdragon 625 chipset, which is known for being battery efficient thus most of the users are expected to survive a full day on single charge.

The phone supports the USB type C port.

Hardware Specifications: Snapdragon 625 chipset is the ideal choice in the midrange segment as it performs satisfactorily even under heavy usage, with no major heating issues as such.  The Octa core A53 processor is clocked at 2.0 ghz along with 3/4 GB Ram and 16/32 GB of Internal storage with SD Card support upto 128 GB will suffice the needs of the common users.

Even heavy gamers will have good gaming experience on this device, although minor lags in some of the graphic intensive games may be observed.

The phone comes with 4G Volte support and Dual Nano Sim slot.

Software and Features: The phone comes with latest Android Nougat 7 out of the box. G5 Plus is equipped with most of the basic sensors with the exception of Compass sensor and IR Blaster. The finger print is placed right below the screen.

It is also has the P2i Nano Coating which makes it a water resistant phone. The phone does lack the LED notification light, but active notification support should serve the purpose. Even the Google Assistant is supported on this device. The regular Moto feature is also available on this device.

Camera: The talking point about the phone is the camera. The rear camera has the f/1.7 aperture which means it can capture more light and promises to capture decent images even under the low light conditions. However, the absence of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) would impact the video quality.

The front camera is 5 mp with f/2.2 aperture which is capable of capturing decent quality selfies. The phone is capable of recording 4k videos as well but due to lack of OIS the focussing may become a problem.

Service Support: Lenovo should improve the after sales services and come out with exclusive service centres for its devices which would help the end users to a great extent. Previously, the main concern with Moto devices was related to after sales services, as often the spare parts are not available and the cost of repair is very high for handsets which are no longer covered under the warranty.

Overall Verdict: Moto G5 Plus from Lenovo is an impressive device which packs performance at reasonable price, Individuals looking for a phone from the so called top tier brand which offers great feature with latest Android OS experience should definitely look at Moto G5 Plus.

Moto G5 ticks most of the right boxes in my opinion, although the build and design could have been better to make the device more compact and presence of OIS in the camera department would have improved the end user experience even more. However, the most notable absence for me is the LED notification light and the IR blaster. Very often, I tend to misplace my remote in my room and the IR Blaster comes in handy, but then we can’t expect everything on a midrange smart phone.

Apart from the minor knit pickings, the phone is a decent buy for the price anybody looking for a new midrange smartphone should consider Moto G5 Plus.
