Moto G2 2014: Review

Moto G 2014 was launched by Motorola just couple of months back and it is the upgraded version of the highly successful Moto G launched last year. Motorola has upgraded some of the features in the phone and in this review we will look at the specification as well as the performance of the phone.

Build

Well this one area where Motorola has been able to beat its rivals hands down. Right from the time Motorola re-entered the market with Moto G they have impressed quite a lot with their design and build quality. With Moto G2 too it’s no different, as the 5’inch device is very compact and gives that premium feel while you hold it. The plastic back has rubberish feel to it and provides better grip on the phone. The build is smooth and yet sturdy and gives an impression that it can survive few drops too (But don’t dare try it. :p). The Moto G2 is definitely an upgrade over its predecessor with 5’ inch display and is 0.6mm slimmer too.

Display

Moto G2 has a 720p display same as the previous version but with a pixel density of 294 ppi due to enhanced screen size. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and has great viewing angles. The display looks vibrant and crispy and you won’t face much difficulty in viewing even under the sunlight. The phone does have the auto brightness sensor and the LED notification light.

Hardware

This is one area where the phone has not seen much of an upgrade compared to its predecessor. Moto G2 still sports the 1.2 Ghz Quad Core Snapdragon 400 along with 1gb of Ram and Adreno 305 GPU clocked at 450 mhz. However in terms of performance they still will be able to give a lag free smooth experience. Multitasking is also not an issue on this phone.
The only upgrade in Hardware comes with the External SD support provided on this device which was missing in its predecessor. It can support a SD card upto 32 GB. Although the specification are similar to one we find on mid range device however the performance wise you will find it is very well optimized and you won’t have much to complain.

Software

Moto G2 runs on the latest Android Kitkat 4.4.4 and will get an assured upgrade to Android L. Many of the mid range devices don’t get the latest upgrade but with Moto G2 this is not an issue. Again, the OS is without any customization so you will get the stock android experience barring a few Motorola applications.
Android runs on this device pretty smoothly and you will not notice any lag during the usage. The UI is also pretty responsive and functions smoothly.

Battery Life

Here also we don’t see any upgrade as it uses the same 2070 mah battery. The battery life is still good for a 5’ inch device but if you compare it with the previous version it is easily 10% to 15% less.
Still the phone will be able to last you the entire day easily with moderate to slightly heavy usage. Motorola have optimized the battery very well for this device.

Gaming

Adreno 305 clocked at 450 mhz is able to play most of the games pretty smoothly and you will not find any major issues while playing games. In some of the graphics intensive games you will find missing of frames and a bit of lag but still most of the games are pretty much playable on the device. The phone does not have severe heating issues like some other phones while gaming.

Network & Reception

Here to we see Motorola have made some improvement as the previous version had seen many complains of poor call quality and frequent call drops. But with Moto G2 call quality has improved a lot and the network connectivity is also decent.
Even long duration calls did not face any issue on this device.

Camera

One of the major complains with the previous version has been that it had a very ordinary camera. This complaint too has been worked upon and now we have an 8 megapixel rear camera and quality of images captured by it is definitely better than its predecessor. It can record videos at 720p and video quality is also decent.
The front camera has also been beefed up and now we have a 2 megapixel shooter which is good for taking selfies.

Overall Impression

Moto G2 is impressive phone from the stable of Motorola. It is the one of the top tier brands which has priced a great phone so aggressively. The device is able to handle most of things thrown at it along with the premium look and design. Some of the features too have been improved or upgraded and pricing too seems to be pretty reasonable making it a pretty attractive buy.
Those who already own the previous version don’t necessarily need to upgrade to Moto G2 as there is nothing much you are missing out on apart from the external SD card support, slightly larger screen and improved camera.
