Micromax Canvas A1: An Android One Device

Google in association with few of the Domestic Manufacturers have decided to launch a series of budget Android One devices. These devices are mainly targeted towards attracting entry level buyers who want a phone with latest OS updates. It is being observed that Nokia does roll out latest Windows OS updates even for its budget end devices but it is not the same with Android run manufacturers. So to address this issue Google came up with the Android One concept.
Initially, Micromax, Spice and Karbonn have launched Android One devices but it is being said that other top tier brands may also launch Android One devices pretty soon. In this article we will look at Micromax Canvas A1 smartphone as Micromax is a more popular brand and has got slightly better after sales service compared to the rest in the competition.
However in terms of price and specification all the devices from the 3 manufacturers are almost the same with only minor difference being at the back with their respective logo. All these devices have been built according to the specifications provided by Google and therefore performance wise also they pretty similar. Google has assured updates on all these devices for next 18 months which means they will be one of the first devices to get the latest Android L update.

Build
Being a budget Android phone the build is nothing spectacular and looks pretty ordinary. It is entirely made up of plastic but feels quite comfortable to hold and can be operated with single hand. The phone looks pretty compact and solid when you use it.
It has a removable back cover and battery is also user removable which again is preferred by a lot of users as you can manually change the battery.
Display
The display is pretty average FWVGA with a resolution of 854*480 which gives you a pixel density of 217 ppi. During use the display seems to be pretty decent and color reproduction comes out very well and most of the users won’t have issues with it.
Moreover, the slightly less resolution will help to conserve battery and give you more screen time.
Hardware
The device is powered by Quadcore Mediatek Processor clocked at 1.2 ghz which gives it enough power to manage most of task without lag. It is also backed by 1 gb of RAM which makes multitasking on this device pretty smooth and GPU used is Mali 400mp sufficient to play most of the games at medium graphics setting.
Storage is bit disappointing with the internal storage being only 4 gb (2 gb approx available for user) but it supports a Micro SD card up to 64 gb. Another limiting factor of this phone is that camera does not work without a Micro SD card and in order to use the camera you have to use a Micro SD card as the images directly gets saved in the external storage. However you have the option of saving most of the files and application on the SD card which will help in overcoming the low internal storage.
Software
It is one of the highlighting factor of the phone as it runs the latest Android Kitkat 4.4 with guaranteed upgrade to Android L and will continue to get the latest updates for the next 18 months atleast. It runs the stock Android which ensures that the device is responsive and does not exhibit any lag whatsoever.
Any user who wants to experience stock android with assured updates should look at this device seriously.
Battery Life
Battery Life on this device is also decent and most of the users will be able to last a day on a single charge. However if you are a very heavy user then carrying a Power Bank or additional battery will help but in general the battery life is pretty decent on the phone.
Gaming
The device is able to handle most of the games without any issue and you won’t see any lag while gaming. The phone remains responsive during gaming and does not exhibit any heating issues as such.
However with limited storage few might just find it annoying having to install the game on the external storage (Micro SD Card).
Network and Reception
The call quality and reception on this phone is excellent and most of the users won’t have any issues with the network reception or the audio quality. The phone has no trouble in detecting the network and voice calls are also very clear.
Camera
Camera is one of the weakest link of the phone as the images taken from this phone come out to be pretty average. In day light the phone manages to take decent pictures but in low light it fails miserably. The front camera is also mediocre.
Video quality is also not that great on the phone.
Overall Impression
Overall considering the price of the device and the specifications I would say it is one of the best Budget Android phones in the market as of now. With guaranteed Android update it definitely holds an upper hand when compared to other devices in this same price range. The only minor con is the mediocre camera and low internal storage. However with the Micro SD card support storage issue can be sorted out.
Another cause is the after sales service of the phone as I’m not very sure about it. But Micromax does have more Service Centers compared to other Android One producing brands and with Google support I’m sure they will be able to do a better job.
At this price point it is one of the most fluid devices in the market.
