Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 just got concluded in Barcelona, Spain. It is the annual showpiece event where the major players from tech and digital industry gather to showcase their products to the world.
Smartphone makers grab major attention during the event as most of the top brands chose this Global summit to announce their new products in the market. This time too the MWC witnessed quite a number of new launches announced by the respective brands which are slated to hit the global markets this year.
Lets look at some of the major announcements at MWC 2017:
Smartphones
The smartphone segment is the integral part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This year too it was no different with leading brands using the platform to announce the launch of some of their latest devices.
Some of the major devices announced at the MWC 2017:
Nokia (HMD owned Brand): A lot of buzz was doing round with the Nokia brand re-entering the market and they did so with the announcement of 3 Smartphones and reintroduction of their most popular erstwhile handset the Nokia 3310 which was first launched in the year 2000. HMD is focusing on the mid range segment as the devices showcased fall in the budget to midrange segment at the very best.
Devices launched by Nokia:
Nokia 3310 (Reintroduced): HMD has struck an impressive marketing strategy by re-launching the Nokia 3310 as it would help them to connect with the masses and regain the trust of the end customers. The phone sports new look and design with additional features which would make it a rich feature phone. The phone does come with few changes to justify its existence in this present generation. It comes with 2 megapixel (mp) rear camera and is expected to be priced at Rs 3,500/-.
The phone will be launched in India somewhere in June and will expect to receive huge response from the Nokia fans.
Nokia 3: It is the budget end phone announced at the summit. It comes with reasonable specs and only time can tell about the performance of the device. Although the expected price of the phone seems to be on the higher side when compared with the current devices available in the market and specs offered by them. It is expected to be priced around Rs 10,000/- in India. The phone sports 5 inch display and comes with Mediatek chipset.
Nokia 5: The second in the series of Nokia smartphones, it comes with unibody metal design sporting 5.2 inch screen , 13 mp rear camera and 8 mp front camera. Snapdragon 430 chipset is used with 2 GB of Ram and 16 GB of internal storage along with SD Card support. The device may sport a price tag in the range of Rs 13,500/-.
Nokia 6: This is kind off confusing, as Nokia 6 also sports the Snapdragon 430 chipset with 16 mp rear camera and 8 mp front camera with 32GB/64GB internal storage and 3/4 GB of Ram. It may come with a price of Rs 16,000/- in India. Some of the difference it has with Nokia 5 is in the display size (5.5inch), camera and additional 1GB of Ram.
Nokia could have gone with atleast Snapdragon 625 chipset on Nokia 6 as it expected to be priced above Rs 15k and would compete against the likes of Moto G5 Plus. The chipset used on Nokia 5 and 6 is currently available on some of the budget end smartphones. Therefore, If Nokia has to justify the price they need to be excellent with the camera and performance of these phones. The devices are expected to be launched in India by June.
Motorola Smartphones
Lenovo owned Motorola too announced their G series lineup. The phone looks impressive on the specs sheet and end performance can only be determined once the device is launched. The device is expected soon in India on March 15th and will be sold exclusively on Flipkart.
Moto G5: The phone sports the Snapdragon 430 chipset along with 2/3GB of Ram and 16/32 GB of internal storage. The rear camera provided on the phone is of 13 mp and rear camera is of 5 mp. It has a 5 inch display which makes it pretty much user friendly.
MotoG5 Plus: The senior pro comes with Snapdragon 625 chipset, 2/3/4 Gb of Ram and 32/64 GB of internal storage. G5 is expected to have a powerful camera like its predecessor which makes it an exciting device. The display has been kept at 5.2 inch which is very sensible in my opinion.
LG Smartphones
G6: LG also announced their flagship LG G6 which too is going to be launched soon. The phone comes with near bezel less screen but the display is bit too large for my liking at 5.7 inch. The device is powered by Snapdragon 821 chipset and 4GB of Ram, and 3300 mah battery. The camera is something LG is banking on, we need to wait for the launch to check out the same.
Sony Smartphones
Also launched their flagship Xperia XZ Premium which sports the Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 4k display. Along with it also launched three more models Xperia XZs (upgrade of the existing XZ), Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra, the latter two being the midrange handsets.
Smartwatches
Huawei: P10 and P10 Plus were unveiled at the MWC Summit. Both run on the Kirin 960 processor and I will try and update more on the specs in the near future. However, they also did announce Huawei 2.0 smartwatch which runs on Android Wear 2.0 which I found exciting apart from the host of other handsets which were launched.
Tablets
Samsung: Most people would have thought that Samsung just might announce the S8 at the event but that did not happen. However, they did launch a 9.7 inch Galaxy Tab S3. The Tab does come with S Pen stylus. Tablets are not so popular for the time being so Tab S3 has to be exceptional to change the trend.
5G Technology
Samsung also spoke about the advancement in technology and the fact that 5G is coming in the future makes the tech world even more exciting. It is still too early to call, as 4G is still making its way in India but we are doing well and soon we will be ready for it as industry is preparing to embrace the change.
