Samsung has recently launched Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime in India and it can be regarded as the successor to their kind off successful phone the Galaxy Grand Duos and Grand 2 Duos. The mid range phone market has become a competitive market with Motorola bringing in the Moto G (highly successful) last year and following it up with Moto G2 ( also a very good phone) this year. It is based on the 64 bit architect chip and uses the new Snapdragon 410 chipset.

Samsung is also facing tough competition from Chinese companies as well like the Gionee and Xiaomi. So this time they had to come with something amazing to woo the customers back and it seems they have tried to do just that with this device. If you look at the specification it does promise a lot and pricing of the phone also seems reasonable considering they do have a decent after sales service record.
Now let’s have a look at the device.
Build
Samsung has finally brought in something different this time as the build quality of this device is pretty good. It is made out of good quality plastic and gives a metal like feel. It feels good to hold and is different compared to the previous mid range phones from Samsung. The design is sleek and battery is user removable.
Display
It has a qHD (540*960) display and not a 720 p display but still the screen quality is pretty good and you won’t be complaining much about it. It has got good viewing angles with Corning Gorilla Glass on top. The phone does lack the Auto Brightness Sensor so under sunlight and even indoors you have to manually adjust the brightness.
Hardware
The most interesting area of this phone is the Hardware. This phone comes with 64 bit processor which is pretty new and not seen much till date. It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with the processor clocked at 1.2ghz and GPU used is also the new Adreno 306. So in terms of hardware the phone looks decent and we can expect very good performance from it. It has an internal storage of 8GB and you can expand the storage with Micro SD Card to 64GB.
Software
Out of the box Prime runs the latest Android 4.4.4 but it remains to be seen whether it gets the Lollipop update and even if it does how much time will Samsung take to roll it out.
The custom TouchWiz UI from Samsung runs on top of the Android Kitkat however it does not have a lot of bloatwares installed. With TouchWiz you may notice a minor lag but nothing grave or irritating.
Battery Life
Battery Life on this device is decent and can last you for a day and half with moderate use. Normal users and even heavy users won’t have a problem surviving a day on a single charge.
Gaming
The device could play most of the games however it did have issues with some of the high end games. While playing high end games some of the games did show considerable amount of lag while some games became unplayable at time. It could be an issue with the new GPU not optimized for some of the high end games. So for gamers this could be a deterrent factor.
Network and Reception
Call quality, Network Reception is decent on the phone and you won’t face any kind of issue regarding it.
Camera
The rear camera is 8 megapixel and does take some really good shots. But you need to have steady hands because in some of the clicks you might see stabilization issue. Apart from that camera works perfectly and video quality is also very good. Front Camera gives a very good performance and video quality on the front camera is also very good.
Overall Impression
The phone looks to be an impressive device with minor optimization issues however in day to day usage it performs very well. The pricing of the device is also very good compared to the features offered by the phone and also the after sales service provided by Samsung. The speaker on the phone also does very well and voice recording on the phone is good while making videos. Overall it is a good alternative for people who don’t want to go with Moto G or other lesser known brands as the specification and all round performance of the phone is decent. However it does not have an Auto Brightness Sensor and LED Notification Light. So these are the minor cons with the device.
