HTC Desire 820 is one of most exciting upper end mid range phone (Rs 24,000/- to Rs 30,000/-approx expected) to be launched in November,2014 and seems to be an exciting proposition considering the features on offer. The phone will be powered by a 64 bit processor which promises to manage the RAM usage even better and make our Android experience even better. However, experts claim that true potential of the 64 bit processor could be felt more on the latest Android L over the Kitkat which is running on the most of the devices as of now. In US it may be available for around $ 450 approx (expected).
But with the Smartphone industry jumping almost two generations in a year it is only matter of time when most of phones will come with 64 bit processors and it won’t be a selling point anymore.
Now let’s come back to this phone and have a look. HTC claims this device to be best camera phone ever to hit the market and it remains to be seen as to what extent their claim is justified. However as per the specifications it does look pretty impressive.
Build
Look wise this device is similar to its predecessor Desire 816 only with few tweaks around the camera lens and bezels. It sports new colored trims around the bezels which renders it the modern look. The back is made up of glossy plastic which makes it a finger print magnet and you need to get an external cover for protection. The device is very slim with a thickness of just 7.7mm but with the 5.5 inch screen single hand use may not be possible. However it is ergonomically designed and user won’t have trouble using the phone. Although made up of plastic the phone does look premium and HTC are known for manufacturing devices supporting great looks and feel.
Display
Desire 820 comes with 720p display protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The 5.5 inch display gives you a pixel density of 267 ppi. Although we would have loved the 1080p display but when you look at the screen you won’t find any major flaw with it. The display is vibrant and viewing angles also seem to be good.
Hardware
This may well be the selling point of the phone as it sports a 64 bit octa core processor on Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset. This will be the first phone with this hardware configuration. It has two Quad Core processors clocked at 1.5 ghz and 1.0 ghz respectively. You will have to wait for the Android L update to see the real performance on this device as it has been optimized to run on 64 bit processors unlike the Kitkat which is based on 32 bit.
It also boasts of 2gb RAM and GPU used is Adreno 405 which will make it a very interesting device for the gamers as well.
It has an internal storage of 16gb out of which around 11gb to 12 gb will be available to the users. You can pop in a Micro SD Card too as it supports external storage upto 128 gb.
It also has the front dual speakers like the one seen in HTC One M8.
Software
It runs on the latest Android OS, i.e Kitkat 4.4 but HTC has assured of Android L update at the earliest. On top of the Android it runs the custom UI which is the HTC Sense 6.0. The UI seems pretty responsive as per the experts and transition to apps is also very smooth. Overall the user experience seems to be pretty good.
Battery Life
The phone sports a 2600 mah battery which is sufficient to last anybody through a day with normal usage. Like its flagship device we can expect this phone to give similar battery life.
Camera
Considered as the USP of the phone, HTC has gone on to make a lot of claims about it and we hope that Camera is able to justify itself in real life usage. It does offer some really impressive functions and control which might attract people who want a decent camera phone. It has 13 mp rear camera with LED flash.
Front Camera is also a massive 8 mp which may just do more than snapping good selfies.
Overall Impression
If the price remains within the expected range or below then this phone surely would prove to be a great buy. The phone boasts of a new hardware along with some real cool features which could attract buyers to it. The build and design of the phone also will appeal to younger generation.
This phone may just help HTC to capture some market share in the Mid Range Smart phones segment as they don’t have any other Top Tier Brand with devices with similar specifications.
