LG Spirit: A Midrange Smartphone

LG recently launched their new Midrange smartphone for the Indian market and also in some other countries. The launch of the device was announced at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC). In the past I have observed that although LG do manufacture decent devices but they generally don’t sell that well in India compared to some of the other brands. 

The device is available on online e-tail stores for around Rs 13,400/- ($ 220 approx). The best thing about the phone is that it comes with latest Android Lollipop pre installed on the phone. At the moment there are hardly any phones in the midrange segment which come with Android Lollipop pre installed.

The phone was launched few days back and there is still a bit of confusion regarding the specifications on the phone. I will update once more is known about the device.

Let’s look at the reasons to buy this phone:-

Latest Android OS and UI: If you are looking for a midrange Android Phone with latest OS pre installed then this may be the phone just for you. The UI on the phone is same as the one used on LG G3 which offers a lot of features and functions. The camera features on this phone also looks impressive. It has the Knock On Mode and other features found on LG’s other devices.

Good Build Quality and Design: The device looks premium in terms of design and build. The volume rocker is at the back just below the camera which makes it user friendly. The phone sports a curved design making it convenient for single hand operation.

Reputed Brand: LG is one of the reputed brands in the market and none of the top tier brands have come out with any devices in this price range along with latest OS. The devices which will compete with it are the ones manufactured by Chinese companies and many of us are not too keen to buy those devices.

Decent Hardware Specifications: The hardware specification on this device is looks decent and will be able handle most of the tasks. The phone runs on a 64 Bit chipset which promises to give optimum performance with the Lollipop OS. The battery on this phone should be able to last you through a full working day on moderate use.

Reasons to avoid this phone:-

Occasional Lag: Reports and reviewers have stated that you will find minor lag on the phone at times. Although the phone has got decent hardware configuration but I feel 1 GB of Ram is not sufficient to give you lag free experience on this phone. Furthermore, the UI on this device is slightly heavy so it may also slow down the device a bit.

Better Alternatives Available: The price at which this phone has been launched you will find many alternatives for it which are much more powerful and provide smoother experience. The devices launched by Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Lenovo will give this device a stiff competition. In terms of specifications and performance too they may just surge ahead of this device.

No 4G LTE Support: This phone does not come with 4G LTE support which is now available even on some of the budget end devices. In India, 4G is slowly but surely expanding its base and many of the users will like to use a 4G compatible device. So it will not serve the purpose of Individuals looking for 4G enabled devices.

Overall Impression

This phone does look decent for the price. But it also has some shortcomings and I would not recommend this phone to heavy or power users. However the camera on this phone is decent and for anybody who is looking beyond phones from Chinese manufacturers than this phone will be the best bet.

The phone has got mediocre hardware specifications but does come with the latest Android Lollipop and is expected to perform satisfactorily for moderate users. LG could have priced this device a bit more aggressively.
