Huawei Honor Holly: A Decent Budget Phone

Sunday, November 9th, 2014 Amritesh no responses

HUAWEI is one the many Chinese Smartphone manufacturers to enter India recently with their range of Handsets and they plan to make it big in India. Here we will look at their Budget Android Device Huawei Honor Holly. It is priced just at Rs 6,999/- and
the specification provided at this price looks impressive.
      Build

In build and design department it has a pretty average looks and body is made of plastic. The back is glossy which does suggest that it will be a finger print magnet. The phone weighs 156 gm and overall the finish looks decent considering the price at which it has been released in the market. It also sports a LED notification light.
It has a removable back cover and the battery too is user replaceable. Capacitive Keys are not backlit which may be an issue with some.

      Display

It sports an impressive 720p display with pixels density working out to be 294 ppi. The display look vivid and color reproduction on the device is great. The viewing angles are also good and viewing is very soothing to the eyes.
Again in a budget phone we hardly get to see a HD screen but this one sports one and is good too. The only downside is that it does not have a Corning Gorilla Glass protection and hence you need screen protector to save it from scratches.

      Hardware

Honor Holly does cripple on the hardware as well. It comes with 1.Ghz QuadCore Mediatek Processor backed by 1 gb of Ram and Mali 400 MP2 GPU which gain is pretty decent for the device. The hardware configuration ensures that device will be able to perform most of the task and can also give you a decent gaming experience as well.
One of the highlighting factors of the phone is the internal storage. It has a 16gb storage which we don’t normally see in Budget end smartphones. Out of the 16 gb end user will get around 13 gb of free space. It also comes with a Micro SD Card support which can expand the storage to 32gb.

      Software

It runs the Android Kitkat 4.4.2 which has been customized by Huawei. It runs its own Emotion UI over the Android OS which is a bit different and some of the users may not prefer it. However the UI is pretty responsive and does show any major lags.
It is not yet known whether the device will get Android L update.

      Battery Life

Battery Life on this phone is average and with moderate use it will last you a day but if you are a heavy user you might have to charge twice a day. If you are heavy user or travelling then an additional battery or power bank may be useful.

      Gaming

Gaming on this device is also gives you a very good experience as it is able to handle most of the high end games with ease and you won’t see major lags on the device. Even graphics intensive games can be played on the device which makes it a very good device for gaming too.

      Network and Reception

Here the device does seem to have some issue. Although call quality is pretty good and you won’t face any problem with that but network reception does face issues at times. If you use 3G you are more likely to face the problems otherwise the device functions normally.

      Camera

Camera performance is not outstanding but compared to other budget end phones you have to say it performs very well. The rear camera is an 8 megapixel shooter which does take decent pictures in daylight but weakness of the camera does show up in artificial light.
The front camera is a 2 megapixel shooter which does manage to click decent selfies and is good enough for video calling.
Although 1080p video recording is possible but it appears to be pretty soft while videos shot at 720p look much better.

      Overall Impression

Huawei Honor Holly does look impressive given the price and specifications offered. The display looks good and offers more internal storage coupled with good camera and gaming experience.
However the brand is pretty new in India and we don’t know much about their after sales service. Do find out about service centers before buying this phone.

You can also have a look at the Micromax Android One device which is also a decent device at the same price point.
